एक छोटे से गांव के बाहर एक सुबह ही सुबह एक बैलगाड़ी आकर रुकी थी। और उस बैलगाड़ी में बैठे हुए आदमी ने उस गांव के द्वार पर बैठे हुए एक बूढ़े से पूछा, इस गांव के लोग कैसे हैं? मैं इस गांव में हमेशा के लिए स्थायी निवास बनाना चाहता हूं।

उस बूढ़े ने कहा: मेरे मित्र, अजनबी मित्र, इसके पहले कि मैं तुम्हें बताऊं कि इस गांव के लोग कैसे हैं, क्या मैं पूछ सकता हूं कि उस गांव के लोग कैसे थे, जिससे तुम आ रहे हो?

उस आदमी ने कहा: उनका नाम और उनका ख्याल ही मुझे क्रोध और घृणा से भर देता है। उन जैसे दुष्ट लोग इस पृथ्वी पर कहीं भी नहीं होंगे। उन शैतानों के कारण ही, उन पापियों के कारण ही तो मुझे वह गांव छोड़ना पड़ा है। मेरा हृदय जल रहा है। मैं उनके प्रति घृणा से और प्रतिशोध से भरा हुआ हूं। उनका नाम भी न लें। उस गांव की याद भी न दिलाएं।

उस बूढ़े ने कहा: फिर मैं क्षमा चाहता हूं। आप बैलगाड़ी आगे बढ़ा लें। इस गांव के लोग और भी बुरे हैं। मैं उन्हें बहुत वर्षों से जानता हूं।

वह बैलगाड़ी आगे बढ़ी भी नहीं थी कि एक घुड़सवार आकर रुक गया और उसने भी यहीपूछा उस बूढ़े से कि इस गांव में निवास करना चाहता हूं। कैसे हैं इस गांव के लोग?

उस बूढ़े ने कहा: उस गांव के लोग कैसे थे जहां से तुम आते हो? उस घुड़सवार की आंखों में आनंद के आंसू आ गए। उसकी आंखें किसी दूसरे लोक में चली गईं। उसका हृदय किन्हीं की स्मृतियों से भर गया और उसने कहा, उनकी याद भी मुझे आनंद से भर देती है। कितने प्यारे लोग थे। और मैं दुखी हूं कि उन्हें छोड़ कर मुझे मजबूरियों में आना पड़ा है। लेकिन एक सपना मन में है कि कभी फिर उस गांव में वापस लौट कर बस जाऊं। वह गांव ही मेरी कब्र बने, यही मेरी कामना है। बहुत भले थे वे लोग। उनकी याद न दिलाना। उनकी याद से ही मेरा दिल टूटा जाता है।

उस बूढ़े ने कहा: इधर आओ, हम तुम्हारा स्वागत करते हैं। इस गांव के लोगों को तुम उस गांव के लोगों से भी अच्छा पाओगे। मैं इस गांव के लोगों को भलीभांति जानता हूं।

काश, वह पहला बैलगाड़ी वाला आदमी भी इस बात को सुन लेता। लेकिन वह जा चुका था।
