जिज्ञासु के लक्षण-श्रद्धा और नम्रता – Moral Story of a King
एक बार राजा जातश्रुति के राजमहल की छत पर हंस आकर बैठे और आपस में बात करने लगे। एक हंस ने कहा जिसके राजमहल पर हम बैठे है, वह बड़ा धर्मात्मा और दानी है। इसकी कीर्ति दूर-दूर तक फैली हुई है। इस पर दूसरे हंस ने कहा- गाड़ीवान रैक्य की तुलना में यह न तो ज्ञानी है और न दानी।
इस वार्ता को जातश्रुति सुन रहे थे। उन्हें गाड़ीवान रैक्य से भेंट करने की इच्छा हुई। उनने चारों दिशाओं में दूत भेजे। पर वे निराश होकर लौटे। उनने कहा-राजन् हमने सभी नगर, मन्दिर, मठ ढूँढ़ डाले पर वे कही नहीं मिले। तब राजा ने विचार किया ब्रह्मज्ञानी पुरुषों का विषयी लोगों के बीच रहना कैसे हो सकता है। अवश्य ही वे कही साधना के उपयुक्त एकान्त स्थान में होंगे वही उन्हें तलाश कराना चाहिए।
अब की बार दूत फिर भेजे गये तो वे एक निर्जन प्रदेश में अपनी गाड़ी के नीचे बैठे मिल गये। यही उनका घर था। राजा उनके पास बहुत धन, आभूषण, गाऐं, रथ आदि लेकर पहुँचा। उसका विचार था कि रैक्य इस वैभव को देखकर प्रसन्न होंगे और मुझे ब्रह्मज्ञान का उपदेश देंगे। पर परिणाम वैसा नहीं हुआ। रैक्य ने कहा-अरे शूद्र! यह धन वैभव तू मेरे लिए व्यर्थ ही लाया है। इन्हें अपने पास ही रख।” ऋषि को क्रुद्ध देखकर राजा निराश वापिस लौट आया और सोचता रहा कि किस वस्तु से उन्हें प्रसन्न करूँ। सोचते-सोचते उसे सूझा कि विनय और श्रद्धा से ही सत्पुरूष प्रसन्न होते है। तब वह हाथ में समिधाएं लेकर, राजसी ठाठ-बाठ छोड़कर एक विनीत जिज्ञासु के रूप में उनके पास पहुँचा। रैक्य ने राजा में जिज्ञासु के लक्षण देखे तो वे गदगद हो उठे। उनने जातश्रुति को हृदय से लगा लिया और प्रेम पूर्वक ब्रह्म विद्या का उपदेश दिया।
