किसी नगर में एक धनिक व्यापारी था।
किसी नगर में एक धनिक व्यापारी था। उसने दुर्जनों के साथ अपना व्यापारिक सम्बन्ध स्थापित किया, जिससे उसका अपना संचित धन तो नष्ट हुआ ही, साथ ही दूसरों का ऋण भी हो गया। जिनसे उसने ऋण लिया था, वे उस व्यापारी से धन वसूल करने के लिए उसे भाँति-भाँति सताने लगे। तब व्यापारी ने सोचा कि कहीं नौकरी करके जो कुछ उपार्जन करूँ, उसमें से थोड़ा-थोड़ा ऋण सभी का चुका दूँ।
ऐसा निश्चय कर उसने एक व्यापारी के यहाँ नौकरी कर ली। उससे पेट-पालना ही बड़ी कठिनाई से होता था तो देने वाले को क्या दे पाता? उधर लेनदारों को ब्याज भी न मिलने के कारण ऋण भी बढ़ता चला गया और तब लेनदारों ने अधिक कड़ा तकाजा करना और सताना प्रारम्भ कर दिया।
लेनदारों में एक व्यक्ति उसका सुहृदय मित्र था। उसने उसे परामर्श दिया कि तुम्हें इतना अल्प वेतन मिलता है, जिससे तुम ऋण नहीं चुका सकते, इसलिए उस विष्णुदत्त नामक बड़े व्यापारी के पास जाकर बिना वेतन निश्चित किये ही कार्य करने लगो।
यदि उसके कार्य को अपना समझते हुए तन-मन लगा कर करो और जब वह वेतन देने लगे, तब उससे कहो कि मुझे अन्न-वस्त्र ही चाहिए, अधिक लेकर क्या करूँगा? ऐसा करने से तुम पर भरोसा करने लगेगा और तुम्हारे ऋण को भी चुका देगा।
उसकी बात सुनकर वह तुरन्त विष्णुदत्त के पास गया और तन-मन से सेवा करके विश्वास पात्र बन गया। कुछ दिनों में ही उसे प्रमुख व्यवस्थापक बना दिया। इस प्रकार दो-एक वर्ष व्यतीत होनेपर लेनदारों ने अपना ऋण मांगना आरम्भ किया और फिर एक दिन सभी मिलकर विष्णुदत्त के सामने ही अपना धन मांगने लगे। तो वह ऋणी व्यापारी अत्यन्त दुःखित होकर आँसू बहाने लगा।
यह देखकर विष्णुदत्त ने उससे सब बातें जान कर लेनदारों से कहा – उसके ऋण सम्बन्धी सब कागज यहाँ ले आओ, मैं सब धन चुका दूँगा! फिर जब वे कागज ले आये तब विष्णुदत्त ने उनका पूरा ऋण चुका दिया और उसके सब कागज फाड़ कर उसे ऋण मुक्त कर दिया
इसी प्रकार काम, क्रोधादि छः दुर्जनों की संगति को प्राप्त हुआ अज्ञानी पुरुष आत्मबोध रूप संचित धन को खोकर और स्वयं को कर्त्ता-भोक्ता आदि मानकर अज्ञान जनित पाप-पुण्य के द्वारा यमराज का ऋणी हो जाता है। यमराज उसके उन कर्मों का पूरा लेखा जोखा रखते हैं, जिनके फल भोग रूप में जीव बार-बार जन्मता मरता है। फिर किसी द्वैतवादी गुरु की शरण में जाकर उनकी सेवा करता है, तो भी उनके उपदेश रूप वेतन से उसे कुछ लाभ नहीं होता।
तभी किसी विवेकी पुरुष के परामर्श से वह मनुष्य किसी ब्रह्मनिष्ठ सद्गुरु की शरण में जाकर निस्वार्थ सेवा करने लगता है, उससे प्रसन्न हुए उन के सद्गुरु ने उसे सब पापकर्मों के परित्याग और पुण्य फलों का ईश्वर के प्रति समर्पण का तथा जीव और ब्रह्म के अभेद का उपदेश दिया जिससे उसके सभी कर्म-बन्धन कट गये और तब यमराज के यहाँ जो लेखा था वह भी फट गया। इस प्रकार आत्मा और ब्रह्म का अभेद ज्ञान हो जाने पर जीव का सूक्ष्म शरीर भी नहीं रहता।
उस स्थिति में कर्मों का नितान्त क्षय हो जाता है, तब जीव का लेखा-जोखा यमराज के पास से भी नष्ट हो जाता है। जीव की यह स्थिति मोक्ष कहलाती है जिसका मुख्य साधन आत्मज्ञान है।
